But when it comes to adding stuff to the motionEyeOS image which I do my best to keep small, I tend to filter packages. I don't expect users to code too much against it and configuration should be as simple as possible. If you want to maintain an extended fork of motionEyeOS, with many other packages that users request, I'd be happy to help. For me it would be beneficial to have events or paths to new videos published for easy integration into my home automation system, issue could maybe be resolved by just sending events onto the bus and let the consumers do what they want with them rather than local scripts that get executed.
That would be nice to have it part of the image. I was just thinking about installing mosquitto and wrapping mine in a script, too. Sounds like that's the current approach to do then? Blue Iris is one of the most popular windows based software NVR systems. You can easily integrate your cameras via Blue Iris which has its own benefits. Primarily, this is to do with the fact that Blue Iris has much longer list of cameras you can integrate with.

Briefly, I set up an email server on the Pi, have the camera email the Pi, have the email server trigger a script which parses the email for key words and sends MQTT signals as appropriate, at which point the home-assistant MQTT client sees them and triggers automations like blinking a light to scare people off.
NOTE: Do not do this on a public server! If you have any access to the pi from the internet this can put you at risk of becoming a spam drone or worse. If you want set up a legit public email server, you have to do a lost more work. Most cameras foscam, amcrest, etc. Have them send an email to the raspberry pi.
